Neck Mass Q&A

What is a neck mass?

A neck mass is an abnormal growth or lump on your neck. In most cases, a neck mass is benign and harmless. However, a neck mass can be a sign of a more serious condition.

Neck masses can form on any of the skin structures,  glands, muscles, or other structures in your neck and throat. Many conditions can cause neck masses, including:

  • Skin cysts
  • Lipoma
  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid goiter
  • Swollen lymph nodes

You could also have a neck growth as a result of an infection like tonsillitis, strep throat, mononucleosis, or bacterial pharyngitis, which commonly cause swollen lymph nodes appearing as a neck mass or masses.

When should I talk to a doctor about a neck mass?

While most neck masses are harmless and noncancerous, the only way to know is to schedule an exam with an experienced ENT specialist like Dr. Le at Downtown ENT. If your neck mass is present for more than two weeks or if it shrinks but doesn’t go away completely, call Downtown ENT to make an appointment. If it is sore and tender, call for an appointment.  Additionally, if your neck mass interferes with your ability to breathe, speak, or swallow, schedule a consultation.

How is a neck mass diagnosed?

Dr. Le begins with a thorough history and exam to identify the condition causing your neck mass. She might order lab tests to check for signs of thyroid disorders or other infections. Dr. Le also uses endoscopy to examine the inside of your throat, your voice box, and the opening of your esophagus.

Dr. Le might also use an MRI or CT scan to study the internal structures of your neck in more detail. If necessary, Dr. Le schedules a biopsy to collect cells from your neck mass. Depending on your specific needs, she might use a fine needle aspiration, core biopsy, or an open biopsy. As your surgeon, she can perform the biopsy without needing to send you to another doctor.

How is a neck mass treated?

Dr. Le creates a customized treatment plan to address the root cause of your neck mass. For example, she treats infections or illnesses that cause swelling in your throat and neck. She can also provide medical and surgical treatments for nodules or other growths on your voice box, thyroid, or trachea.  With her experience, she can perform any needed surgical procedure to remove the mass with a good cosmetic result when surgery is indicated.

If necessary, Dr. can refer you to an endocrinologist for thyroid problems or an oncologist if your neck mass is cancerous. She collaborates with the best physicians in the city to ensure you get the treatment you need.
